THE ISLAND OF PETE The minimalistic documentary depicts the artist’s creative process under pressure
The Challenge
What started as a portrait of an over-ambitious dreamer becomes the story of failing on your terms and embracing the risk of loss. First-time filmmaker Duane Bruton was inspired by wanting to make a documentary influenced by non-documentary American 1970s films. There are long pauses: silence, time, dreaminess, and grit. The camera sometimes catches up to Pete’s energy before settling down.
The team worked with a micro-budget that allowed for complete creative freedom. The shoot occurred in Gowanus, Brooklyn, at the subject’s residence and woodworking studio. The cinematographer, Matt Fuentes, skillfully balanced hypnotic and raw visuals to match the film’s dual theme. The two filming locations used in the movie were distinct - one claustrophobic and the other having a textural feel, adding a fishbowl-like depth to the overall story.
